MOTORCYCLE FAILURE RATE

By: Kevin E. McCarthy, Principal Analyst

You asked for information on the failure rate for people seeking a motorcycle license from the Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV). You were particularly interested in learning whether the failure rate is higher for larger motorcycles than smaller ones.

DMV does not have specific data on the failure rate for people taking the motorcycle license test. However, the DMV inspectors who administer the test who were contacted by the commissioner’s office estimate that the failure rate is approximately 15% to 18%. They also believe that the failure rate varies with the size and configuration of the motorcycle. In particular, they believe that since large motorcycles with raised handlebars are less maneuverable than smaller motorcycles, their drivers are more likely to fail the part of the test that requires them to maneuver around traffic cones.
