SPARKLER INJURIES IN CONNECTICUT
| ||
By: Veronica Rose, Principal Analyst
You asked how many people in the state have been injured by sparklers since the law allowing people age 16 and older to use sparklers took effect in June 1, 2000.
No comprehensive statistics on sparkler-related injuries in Connecticut are available. The only statistics available are from reports made to the state fire marshal’s office by hospital emergency rooms, and according to the office, not all facilities report these injuries, and those that report do not do so consistently. No statistics are available on injuries that may have been treated outside of emergency rooms, such as clinics, private physicians’ offices, or private health care facilities. Based on the emergency room reports, there were two sparkler-related injuries treated in emergency rooms in 2000, four in 2001, and four in 2002.
