FIREARM PROCESSING LOCATIONS

By: Veronica Rose, Principal Analyst

You asked (1) why the State Police will no longer be processing gun permit applications at Litchfield, Montville, and Tolland and (2) how gun permit fees are used.

According to the State Police, the division will no longer be processing gun permit applications at Litchfield, Montville, and Tolland because all the permitting staff at the three locations were laid off. The division does not plan to resume operations at these locations because on average, each was responsible for only 10% of permits processed annually. By contrast, the average is 40% at the state police headquarters and 27% at Troop G (Bridgeport).

The $ 10 that the division retains for each permit it issues pays for operating expenses. None of the money pays for salaries. (The fee for an original state gun permit is $ 70. The renewal fee is $ 35. )
