VIOLENT OFFENDER REGISTRIES

By: Susan Price-Livingston, Associate Attorney

You asked whether any states have expanded their sex offender registry laws to include violent, non-sexual offenses.

Our review of sex offender registries in other states found two, Kansas and Montana, that have significantly expanded their sex offender registration laws in recent years by including violent offenses that do not necessarily have a sexual component or involve children. The Kansas law covers murder, manslaughter, aggravated kidnapping, kidnapping, and criminal restraint (KSA 22-4902). Montana’s qualifying violent offenses are: aggravated assault; arson; assault on a family member (third offense) minor, or police or court officer; assault with a weapon; homicide; and robbery (MCA 46-23-502).

We enclose brochures from each state describing their registry.
