BRAND REGISTRATION FEES

By: Daniel Duffy, Principal Analyst

You asked for the fees to register a brand of liquor with the Department of Consumer Protections. You also wanted to know if there were any grants available to help start up farm wineries.

The law requires all brands to be registered with the Department of Consumer Protection (DCP). Specifically, before liquor is shipped into, delivered, offered for sale, or sold in this state, its brand name, trade name, or other distinctive characteristic must be registered. Further, the manufacturer’s name and address and those of the wholesalers authorized by the manufacturer must also be registered. DCP must approve the brand, trade name, or other distinctive characteristic.

The fee for a three-year registration is $ 100 if the liquor is imported into the state and $ 3 for liquor manufactured in this state for each registered brand (CGS § 30-63).

There are no grant programs for this purpose.
