VOTER REGISTRATION AMONG YOUNG PEOPLE

By: Mary M. Janicki, Acting Director

You asked for information on state and national trends for political party registration among young people.

We have found no source that provides Connecticut or national statistics on party registration by age group (though some other state and county jurisdiction’s provide such information at election officials’ Internet websites). The Federal Election Commission publishes voter registration and turnout statistics at its website "Voter Registration and Turnout in Federal Elections by Age, 1972-1996. " However, the registration data in this report does not show party affiliation. Each state secretary of the state’s office’s website publishes voter registration data including party enrollment and the number of unaffiliated voters, but there is no breakdown by age.

A National Association of Secretaries of State program focuses on young voters and encourages their participation and turnout at elections. The New Millennium Young Voters Project at http: //www. stateofthevote. org/ includes some statistics on young voters and information on young voting organizations.
