FLASHING WHITE HEADLIGHTS FOR AMBULANCE DRIVERS
By: Veronica Rose, Principal Analyst
You want to know of any problems associated with the flashing white headlamp program authorized by PA 01-192.
PA 01-192 allows any vehicle operated by a volunteer emergency medical technician or member of a volunteer fire department or company to use flashing white headlamps on the way to a medical emergency or fire scene. The vehicle operator must get written authorization from the town's chief law enforcement officer and may use the headlamps only in the town or from a personal residence or place of employment if located in an adjoining town.
According to the Department of Motor Vehicles, the only problem of which it is aware is that people have been calling the department, instead of their chief law enforcement officers, to get the required authorization for the lights. The statutes allow lights in different colors for various purposes and on various types of vehicles. The lights authorized by PA 01-192 are the only ones that require law enforcement authorization.
