By: Saul Spigel, Chief Analyst | ||
You asked for a follow-up to OLR report 2002-R-0274 further describing UConn Medical School and Health Center smoking cessation programs.
Several UConn Medical School programs directly and indirectly address smoking cessation.
· Medical school students work with both a community and a university tutor to develop a community-based project that sums up their medical education in a way that benefits Connecticut communities. Several past projects have focused on tobacco cessation education.
· Internal medicine residents participate in a community service initiative in which they teach health education classes in public schools. Their curriculum covers tobacco cessation.
· Volunteer internal medicine residents provide family life education for adolescents at the nonprofit Family Life Clinic in Hartford. The program addresses many topics, including smoking.
Health Center researchers are evaluating the effects of smoking cessation on bone health in adolescent smokers. Their study looks at markers of bone turnover (bone breakdown and build-up) in adolescents who are involved in a smoking cessation program.
