NON-SENTENCED POPULATION IN CORRECTIONAL FACILITIES

By: Christopher Reinhart, Associate Attorney

You asked for information on the non-sentenced Connecticut prison population and how it has increased from 2000 to 2002.

From March 31, 2000 to March 31, 2002, the non-sentenced prison population grew from 3,136 to 3,680, an increase of 17. 3% or 544 inmates. During this same period, the sentenced population grew from 14,403 to 14,931, an increase of 3. 7% or 528 inmates.

Table 1 shows those offenses where the size of the non-sentenced population increased or decreased by five or more inmates from March 31, 2000 to March 31, 2002. Inmates charged with more than one offense are counted under the most serious offense involved.
