SENTENCED AND PRETRIAL PRISON POPULATION | ||

You asked for a breakdown of the prison population for sentenced inmates and inmates awaiting trial or sentencing.
Table One shows the total number of people incarcerated, sentenced, and awaiting trial or sentencing (non-sentenced inmates) on March 31 of 2000, 2001, and 2002. As you can see, while all three categories grew from March 31, 2000, to March 31, 2002, non-sentenced inmates became a larger percentage of the total inmate population, growing from 17. 9% on March 31, 2000, to 19% on March 31,2002.

Table Two focuses on the number of sentenced inmates on March 31, 2002 arranged by number of offenders. It only lists those offenses that constitute at least one percent of the total number of people sentenced on that date. Offenders who were convicted of more than one offense are counted under the most serious offense they were convicted of.
