2000 CENSUS FIGURES-SAME-SEX PARTNER HOUSEHOLDS IN CONNECTICUT
By: Susan Price-Livingston, Associate Attorney
You asked about the U. S. Census Bureau's 2000 data on Connecticut households with same-sex, unmarried partners.
Data from the bureau's Census 2000 Summary File shows a total of 7,386 such households in Connecticut. Of these, 3,559 were male householders with male partners, and 3,827 were female householders with female partners. The data was derived from questions asked on the census "short form" questionnaire, meaning that all people who received census questionnaires were asked to provide this information.
We enclose two tables that we compiled using the Census Bureau's public database AmericanFactFinder (http: //factfinder. census. gov). The first shows the number of same-sex partner households (and households comprised of unmarried, heterosexual partners) in Connecticut by county. The second shows the same data by Congressional district.
We also include the U. S. Census Bureau's technical note explaining why the 1990 and 2000 census data on unmarried, same-sex partners cannot be directly compared.
