VETERANS' TUITION WAIVERS
By: Judith Lohman, Chief Analyst
You asked (1) what tuition waivers the state provides for veterans and (2) which veterans are eligible.
By law, tuition is waived at the University of Connecticut, the Connecticut State University System, and the community-technical college system for wartime veterans who are (1) accepted for admission to the institutions and (2) Connecticut residents at the time of acceptance
(CGS § 10a-77(d), 10a-99(d), and 10a-105(e)).
Wartime service must (1) be as a member of the United States Army, Navy, Marine Corps, Coast Guard, or Air Force or of the armed forces of any government associated with the United States and (2) last for 90 days or more or, if the military operation lasted less than 90 days, for the entire operation. The latter condition does not apply to a veteran separated earlier because of a Veteran's Administration-rated service-connected disability. Table 1 shows the operations occurring since 1940 and their dates that qualify as wartime service under Connecticut law (CGS § 27-103).
