VOCATIONAL-TECHNICAL SCHOOL TRADE PROGRAMS
By: Judith Lohman, Chief Analyst
For the 13 most popular vocational-technical (V-T) school trade programs, you asked for (1) a breakdown of students enrolled in each by gender and race-ethnicity and (2) the starting and average salaries for workers in the occupations represented.
RACIAL, ETHNIC, AND GENDER BREAKDOWN
Table 1 shows the number of students enrolled in each of the 13 programs by sex and race and ethnicity as of October 1, 2001. The numbers represent 10th, 11th, and 12th grade students. Another 3,322 9th graders have not yet chosen a trade program.

WAGES AND SALARIES
Table 2 shows the starting and average wages for Connecticut for various jobs within the V-T school trade categories. Because vocational-technical school trade programs are broader than the state Department of Labor's (DOL) occupational listing, match-ups between the trade programs and the occupations may not be exact. The data below are DOL estimates of earnings in the fourth quarter of 2000 (the most up-to-date published data), compiled by inflating actual data from the fourth quarter of 1999 by the Employment Cost Index for the appropriate occupational division.
