PROHIBITING USE OF SOCIAL SECURITY NUMBERS AS EMPLOYEE IDENTIFICATION NUMBERS
By: Kristina D. Arsenault, Research Fellow
You asked if any law prohibits companies such as SBC/SNET from using Social Security numbers as employee identification numbers.
We contacted the Connecticut Department of Labor, checked federal and state statutes, and reviewed the U. S. General Accounting Office report entitled "Social Security: Government and Commercial Use of the Social Security Number is Widespread. " We found no federal or state law that regulates overall use of Social Security numbers. Federal law neither requires nor prohibits many of the public and private sectors uses of the Social Security number.
