CREDIT CARD INTEREST RATE LIMITS

By: Helga Niesz, Principal Analyst

You asked whether there is a limit on the interest rate either in-state or out-of-state credit card issuers can charge in Connecticut.

Neither Connecticut nor federal law currently limits interest on credit cards issued by in-state or out-of-state banks or retailers, except for a state limit of 18% annually on gasoline dealers' credit cards that are not issued through banks (CGS § 42-133c). Federal law preempts the state from imposing interest limits on credit cards issued by national banks in Connecticut as well as out-of-state banks.
